Summary

Adding Insight to Injury: The Ultimate Recovery Guide to Help You Reclaim the Life You Love is a book designed to help ensure active people and those that are suffering from injury and pain are properly managing their recovery.

The author, Dr. Jamie Bovay, helps to debunk common misconceptions about injury treatment and recovery and provides guidance on the appropriate steps to take in a tailored recovery journey.

The book is broken down into 11 chapters.

  • The first 3 chapters dive into what common beliefs are around injury recovery and how those beliefs may be keeping you from getting down to the route of the problem.

  • The next 5 explore recovery techniques by the type of injury.

  • Chapter 9 goes into “Wellness” and highlights how simple habits may help you achieve your recovery goals.

  • The final chapters are meant to help the reader to be able to select the right care partners for them and get motivated to make the changes in their lives and routines to get back to doing what they love.

From the description: “What if everything you thought you knew about injury recovery was wrong? If you have ever been injured, you know that there is an overload of information out there, making it very difficult to decide on a path to recovery. With such a range of diverse and, many times, conflicting information out there, how do you know if you are making the best decisions for your health?”

Who is the author and what are his credentials?

Dr. Jamie Bovay, DPT, is a leading physical therapist in the Denver area with his degree from Rockhurst University. He has in-depth experience working in sports and orthopedic physical therapy. Skilled in Sports and Orthopedic Rehabilitation, Dry Needling, IASTM, return-to-sport training, and Vestibular Rehabilitation. My Opinion (as a chronic pain sufferer, and now, a patient at Dr. Bovay’s clinic)

Pros: This book convinced me, as someone currently suffering from a flare-up of sciatica and lower back, pelvic, and knee pain to leave my physical therapist to become a patient at Dr. Bovay’s clinic, so it is quite an influential piece. I was lucky to be in Denver where I could give his practice a try. The book has so many great tips in it. I redid my home office so that my desk and chair ergonomically fit my body as my previous office set up was far too big for my figure. I admit that some of the literature may seem obvious to some, but I still believe that it is purposeful to call out what may not be obvious to others. How useful the book depends on how much misinformation a reader has already been given.

Cons: The introduction with the author’s injury and speedy recovery feels unrelatable for many people. His experience of the rapid resolution, while relatable to some, somewhat undermines the complexity of pain issues that many patients, like myself, have. At first, this caused me to feel a lack of connection with the author’s experience, which almost caused me to stop reading; however, I instead persisted and was glad that I did.

Some readers may feel a slight bias of the author in Chapters 10 and 11, as the intention is to steer you away from a certain type of physical therapy practice and point you toward one that is like that of the author’s clinic, KinetikChain Denver. While this approach is a great way for patient acquisition, it might lead patients to write off other physical therapy practices that may otherwise truly benefit them. The physical therapy clinic I was at prior to KinetikChain was effective with some of my recoveries and certainly would work for many people. Still, leading up to the final chapters there is a lot of great information, so I would advise readers to consider their own experiences and needs when choosing the physical therapy clinic that is right for them.

Who would this be good for?

Adding Insight to Injury would be good for individuals who are...

  1. Looking to recovery from an injury and get back to the active lifestyles they lead

  2. Have tried everything else without seeing the results they want

  3. Worried about their ability to live the active life they’ve led for the rest of their lives

  4. Frustrated by the conflicting information they’ve received on how they should treat their pain and injuries

  5. Are considering surgery but would like to try to avoid it

  6. Are sufferers of chronic pain or physical therapists who work with individuals with chronic pain

Adding Insight to Injury may not be the best option if you...

  1. Already feel confident in your injury or chronic pain program

  2. Believe you have nothing left to learn about the proper way to manage your recovery

  3. Are not dealing with any injuries or pain issues and do not treat those types of patients
